In summary, i moved back to 9ja, youth service, etc, etc, but 1 of d biggest news is considering what i am going thru 2 get my hair done d way i like it... my natural hair dat is. I have decided to keep a chronicle of my woes and maybe in d near future( finger & toes crossed) joys and maybe even in d far future i, may be others will look at it and c how far 9ja has come with their hair wahala, oh and did i mention trying to educate people as well.

Hiya guys,

So a couple of days ago a friend of mine ( Nigerian) met with this guy (Zimbabwean), who, believe me was ecstatic to make the acquaintance of Nigerians. So, he came in, sat down, we offered tea and all what not....... and out off habit we switched to pidgin english. After a while, feeling scared and guilty (cos we were talking about him of course) i asked, "do u understand pidgin english?" lol, just in case he heard all that i had been saying about him, and he replied no.

To cut a long story short, i as a 9ja and ever proud of my heritage started bragging that pidgin english originated 4rm 9ja, and that this(pidgin english) and jollof rice where just a few of the gifts 9ja had given to the world, lol lol lol.

The poor guy not even knowing what pidgin english was could not contest my story. I on the other hand thot of you guys and decided to further increase ur knowledge. So str8 to my laptop, and onto trusty wikipedia. Imagine my utter shock and surprise when i found out that 9ja is not the originator of pidgin english. Don't believe me? here is proof.

Okay so what if we didn't invent pidgin english, all i kw is that we popularised it, made it an IN thing, answer me this, who made it fashionable to sing with pidgin english ehhhhh? make una tell me oooo. I rest my case.

February 14 is Valentine's Day. Although it is celebrated as a lovers' holiday today, with the giving of candy, Valentine flowers, or other gifts between couples in love, it originated in 5th Century Rome as a tribute to St. Valentine, a Catholic bishop.
For eight hundred years prior to the establishment of Valentine's Day, the Romans had practiced a pagan celebration in mid-February commemorating young men's rite of passage to the god Lupercus. The celebration featured a lottery in which young men would draw the names of teenage girls from a box. The girl assigned to each young man in that manner would be his sexual companion during the remaining year.
In an effort to do away with the pagan festival, Pope Gelasius ordered a slight change in the lottery. Instead of the names of young women, the box would contain the names of saints. Both men and women were allowed to draw from the box, and the game was to emulate the ways of the saint they drew during the rest of the year. Needless to say, many of the young Roman men were not too pleased with the rule changes.
Instead of the pagan god Lupercus, the Church looked for a suitable patron saint of love to take his place. They found an appropriate choice in Valentine, who, in AD 270 had been beheaded by Emperor Claudius.
Claudius had determined that married men made poor soldiers. So he banned marriage from his empire. But Valentine would secretly marry young men that came to him. When Claudius found out about Valentine, he first tried to convert him to paganism. But Valentine reversed the strategy, trying instead to convert Claudius. When he failed, he was stoned and beheaded.
During the days that Valentine was imprisoned, he fell in love with the blind daughter of his jailer. His love for her, and his great faith, managed to miraculously heal her from her blindness before his death. Before he was taken to his death, he signed a farewell message to her, "From your Valentine." The phrase has been used on his day ever since.
Although the lottery for women had been banned by the church, the mid-February holiday in commemoration of St. Valentine was still used by Roman men to seek the affection of women. It became a tradition for the men to give the ones they admired handwritten messages of affection, containing Valentine's name.
The first Valentine card grew out of this practice. The first true Valentine card was sent in 1415 by Charles, duke of Orleans, to his wife. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London at the time.
Cupid, another symbol of the holiday, became associated with it because he was the son of Venus, the Roman god of love and beauty. Cupid often appears on Valentine cards.

Just in time for Valentine's Day, a panel of scientists examined the mystery of what happens when hearts throb and lips lock. Kissing, it turns out, unleashes chemicals that ease stress hormones in both sexes and encourage bonding in men, though not so much in women.

Chemicals in the saliva may be a way to assess a mate, Wendy Hill, dean of the faculty and a professor of neuroscience at Lafayette College, told a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science on Friday.

In an experiment, Hill explained, pairs of heterosexual college students who kissed for 15 minutes while listening to music experienced significant changes in their levels of the chemicals oxytocin, which affects pair bonding, and cortisol, which is associated with stress. Their blood and saliva levels of the chemicals were compared before and after the kiss.

Both men and women had a decline in cortisol after smooching, an indication their stress levels declined.

For men, oxytocin levels increased, indicating more interest in bonding, while oxytocin levels went down in women. "This was a surprise," Hill said.

In a test group that merely held hands, chemical changes were similar, but much less pronounced, she said.

The experiment was conducted in a student health center, Hill noted. She plans a repeat "in a more romantic setting."

Hill spoke at the session on the Science of Kissing, along with Helen Fisher of Rutgers University and Donald Lateiner of Ohio Wesleyan University.

Fisher noted that more than 90 percent of human societies practice kissing, which she believes has three components — the sex drive, romantic love and attachment.

The sex drive pushes individuals to assess a variety of partners, then romantic love causes them to focus on an individual, she said. Attachment then allows them to tolerate this person long enough to raise a child.

Men tend to think of kissing as a prelude to copulation, Fisher said. She noted that men prefer "sloppy" kisses, in which chemicals including testosterone can be passed on to the women in saliva. Testosterone increases the sex drive in both males and females.

"When you kiss an enormous part of your brain becomes active," she added. Romantic love can last a long time, "if you kiss the right person."

Lateiner, a classical scholar, observed that kissing appears infrequently in Greek and Roman art, but was widely practiced, despite the spread of skin disease at that time by facial kissing. And there was a potential for social faux pas by kissing the wrong person at the wrong time.

Overall, the science of kissing — philematology — is under-researcherd, Hill concluded.

02.14.2008 - Slept all day. Woke up at around 7 pm. Went to my call center job at around 9 pm. And not even one hottie on the floor! See?

This year, I’m not expecting anything since, you know, tomorrow’s Valentine’s Day and I have absolutely no plans whatsoever. Now, I know you don’t control stuff because that’s God and Satan’s job, but since your naked ass is plastered everywhere during Valentine’s, I’m assuming you have something to do with this elaborate charade.

I’m just wonderin’, can you just shoot a really cool, open-minded, intelligent, and hot chick sometime this year? So that next year, on Valentine’s Day, I wouldn’t be this sad sack of emo watching TV and eating ice cream.

hey guys,

sorry i haven't been around in a while, I've been ill plus work etc etc, anyway too much to do and there neva seems to be enuff hours in d day.

so m here to let you guys into what i hear recently. for those of you who r into American TV series, i just watched the 8th episode of the 1st season entitled "titan" of a hot new American show by Jerry bruckheimer(csi) called eleventh hour. anyway the reason why i am dragging this out is cos in the scene where the two black guys are playing the xbox, d song in the background is by a 9ja artist known as proto who is being fronted by eldee the don, the song is called one in a million.

just wanted to let you all know that 9ja is doing it for you guys again. unfortunately i don't have a link to his website(datz if he even has 1), he's defo not on face book as a musician but you can check the song out on YouTube, ok?

As if you smart lot haven't already guessed, yep, its time for the red red wine.

Tannin is what gives red wines a complexity that is beyond that of most white wines.
Tannin has a mouth drying quality that causes the wine to feel firm in your mouth. When a red wine is young, this firmness can be quite intense.
Over time, the qualities of the tannin will mellow and blend harmoniously with the other characteristics of the wine. This is one of the main reasons that red wines usually age better than whites.

Red wine is usually intended to be consumed with a meal instead of on its own. The bold flavors and characteristics (compared to most whites), will stand up to and sometimes complement flavorful foods. mostly its red wine, red meat but red wine and fish can also be good if d red wine is fruity and non tannic, an oregen pinot noir.

more examples of red wine are; cabernet sauvignon, merlot, shiraz, zinfandel, grenache, sangiovese, gamay, nebbiolo, barbera, tempranillo, dolcetto, malbec etc

The French Paradox
The French seem to know something about the health benefits of red wine. In a study that compared French and German red wines, the French red wines delivered a greater health benefit due to their higher level of antioxidants. This may partially account for the "French paradox," where studies show that in areas of France where the diet is high in fat those who drink red wine with meals have a lower incidence of heart attack than other parts of the world. Due to vast differences in diets, the evidence is inconclusive, but experts believe that red wine contains certain compounds that help protect the heart. This has opened the door for other researchers to study the components in red wine that may be responsible for its health benefits.

Red wine headaches ("RWH") are the downside of red wines, they are bad headaches often accompanied by nausea and flushing that occurs in many people after drinking even a single glass of red wine. This syndrome can sometimes develop within 15 minutes of consumption of the wine.
The condition does not occur after consumption of white wine or other alcoholic beverages. Some individuals report that they get a migraine headache hours later from drinking some red wines. No one knows for certain why this syndrome occurs. It probably has more than one cause such as tannins, prostagladins, histamines, sulfites.

White wines are often consumed with lighter meals, think lunch, smaller dinners, appetizers or as an apéritif themselves. They are more refreshing, lighter in both style and taste than the majority of their red wine counterparts, making them ideal for spring and summer occasions. The old guideline of “white wine with white meat” still holds true in many instances, but there are plenty of exceptions and palate preferences that dictate which.

Many of the more established wine experts and expert sites tend to focus on reds with a few words on the white wines of the world added as an after thought and with a sneer seeping through the reviews. Whether this is due to ignorance, snobbery or following fads can't be determined, but it often leaves classic white wines in the cold -- not just climatically. i think its a pure shame cos if i were to drink any wine it would be white wine, it just looks more classy and elegant, easier to get down ur throat, non of the horrid after smells etc etc.

unfortunately for the longest time white wine has no DOCUMENTED health benefits(probably cos all the scientist drink red wine), it had always contain some anti oxidants but no way as near as red wine, this might come in useful to people who are allergic to red wine. until recently it has been discovered that red and white wine share the same health benefits, the proof is here. haha eat ur heart out all you red wine lovers.

White wines are produced all over the world but the most famous are probably those made from the Chardonnay grape in France, you've probably also tasted them in Champagnes. more examples of white wines include;sauvignon blanc, riesling, chenin blanc, pinot grigio, semillion, pinot blanc, albarino, marsanne, viognier, muscat, gewurztraminer etc.

Let me first make this confession my dear friends and readers, i am not an alcohol person, as a matter of fact i am continually mystified by the lure that this liquid has on people, indeed, painfully shy and timid people are embolden, the sorrowful forget or plunge even further into their misery, relationships are broken "i was drunk when i did it" (hala if you've been there, lol), some are even started, the list just goes on and on.

but what i do know is wines and the airs it affords those that worship at its altar. wine drinking is a great constant in civilised society, those who do not drink it are more often than not( even if they don't admit it) mystified, baffled and left feeling inadequate by the numerous etiquette that accompany it. fear not one and all, i come to clear the shroud of mystery as much as i can. after all with all the dinner parties my fellow 9ja's will be attending as the festive season approaches, i need u all with your classy foot 4ward. now for the where u have been to know where you are going lesson, a brief history on wines.

Archaeological evidence suggests that the earliest production of wine, made by fermenting grapes, took place in sites in Israel, Georgia and Iran, from as early as 6000 BC. These locations are all within the natural area of the European grapevine Vitis vinifera.
A 2003 report by archaeologists indicates a possibility that grapes were used together with rice to produce mixed fermented beverages in China as early as 7000 BC. Pottery jars from the Neolithic site of Jiahu, Henan were found to contain traces of tartaric acid and other organic compounds commonly found in wine. However, other fruits indigenous to the region, such as hawthorn, could not be ruled out. If these beverages, which seem to be the precursors of rice wine, included grapes rather than other fruits, these grapes were of any of the several dozen indigenous wild species of grape in China, rather than from Vitis vinifera, which were introduced into China some 6000 years later.

The oldest known evidence of wine production in Europe is dated to 4500 BC and comes from archaeological sites in Greece. The same sites also contain the world’s earliest evidence of crushed grapes. In Ancient Egypt, six of 36 wine amphoras were found in the tomb of King Tutankhamun bearing the name "Kha'y", a royal chief vinter. Five of these amphoras were designated as from the King's personal estate with the sixth listed as from the estate of the royal house of Aten. Traces of wine have also been found in central Asian Xinjiang, dating from the second and first millennia BC.
Wine has also played an important role in religion throughout history. The Greek god Dionysos and the Roman equivalent Bacchus(makes me wonder what ever happened to that 9ja wine, bacchus tonic wine, i think that was what it was called) represented wine, and the drink is also used in Christian and Jewish ceremonies such as the Eucharist and Kiddush.In medieval Europe, the Roman Catholic Church was a staunch supporter of wine since it was necessary for the celebration of Mass. In places such as Germany, beer was banned and considered pagan and barbaric, while wine consumption was viewed as civilized and a sign of conversion to Christianity. Monks in France made wine for years, storing it underground in caves to age.

In the Islamic world, wine was forbidden during the Islamic Golden Age. After Geber and other Muslim chemists pioneered the distillation of wine, however, it was legalized for cosmetic and medical uses. In fact, the 10th-century Persian philosopher and scientist Al Biruni described recipes where herbs, minerals and even gemstones are mixed with wine for medicinal purposes. Wine became so revered and its effect so feared that elaborate theories were developed about which gemstones would best counteract its negative side effects.

okay enuff with the past now into the present. wine basically is an alcoholic beverage made from the fermentation of grape juice. The natural chemical balance of grapes is such that they can ferment without the addition of sugars, acids, enzymes or other nutrients. Wine is produced by fermenting crushed grapes using various types of yeast which consume the sugars found in the grapes and convert them into alcohol. Various varieties of grapes and strains of yeasts are used depending on the types of wine produced.
Although other fruits such as apples and berries can also be fermented, the resultant "wines" are normally named after the fruit from which they are produced (for example, apple wine or elderberry wine.

in the world of wines just as any other, there are different sets of terms of lingo if you will, understanding them helps you hold court with a bottle of wine and become a master.

Austere - The wine is kind of stiff or tight, sort of hard. Hard to tell other traits.

Balance - Describing the relationship between tannin, acid and alcohol. You want to drink a "well-balanced" wine.

Big - A strong, perhaps alcoholic wine. It is a good wine that can get better.

Buttery - A sort of smooth feel and taste, like butter. Most often seen in white wines, which have undergone malolactic fermentation.

Dry - If sugar remains in the wine it is sweet. When it isn't sweet, it’s dry.

Flabby - A bland tasting wine that isn't going to get any better.

Grassy (orherbaceous) - Smells like grass. Often seen in Sauvignon Blanc.

Hard - A wine that has a lot of tannin still in it, like a young fine red. The tannin keeps you from tasting the other qualities of the wine, which will come out through maturation.

Nose - The totality of what you smell.

Thin - A watery sort of wine.

Cru - refers to wine from a high-quality vineyard

Sec - dry

Brut - dry (Champagne)

Demi-sec - off dry (fairly sweet for Champagne)

Doux - sweet

Liquoreux - very sweet

Cuvee - A wine blended from several vats or batches, or from a selected vat. Also used in Champagne to denote the juice from the first pressing of a batch of grapes.

Vintage - The year in which a particular wine's grapes were harvested. When a vintage year is indicated on a label, it signifies that all the grapes used to make the wine in the bottle were harvested in that year.

these are by no means all the terminologies, you can read up on the thousands that there are if you so wish, its quite easy to find.

Now we go into the different types of wines

Alcoholic wines : wines that retain their alcohol

Non- alcoholic wines : which is made with the same process as alcoholic wine but the alcohol is evaporated before bottling, there is still minute traces of alcohol left though but this should not be confused with grape juice which is made from the unfermented juice of grapes. a company named Ariel is renowned for their non-alcoholic wines after winning gold medal against wines with alcohol.

Alcoholic wines are further divided into

Red wine : is made from an assortment of grapes that are reddish, purple and even deep blue in colour.It is the grape skins that are responsible for the red wine’s distinct color spectrum. The skins are in contact with the grape’s juice during the fermentation process, allowing the dispersion of both color and tannins. The individual wine’s particular red hue depends on the grape type used in the process and the length of time the skin’s pigmentation is in contact with juice.

White wine : white wine differs from red wine firstly because of the colour. this is mainly due to the pressing of the grapes. When white grapes are picked, they are immediately pressed and the juice is removed from the skins with little contact. Color in white wine does vary, often from the type of grape, occasionally from the use of wood.

Rose/Blush/Pink wines : Rose wines, often referred to as Blush wines or written Rosé, are wines which are not truly red, but have enough of a reddish tinge to make them assuredly not white. The actual color varies depending on the grapes involved, and often may seem to be more orange than pink or purple.

Rice wine : Rice wine is an alcoholic beverage made from rice. Unlike wine, which is made by fermentation of naturally sweet grapes and other fruit, rice "wine" results from the fermentation of rice starch converted to sugars.

Cooking wine : is considered a wine of such poor quality, that it is unpalatable by itself and intended for use only in cooking. There is a school of thought that advises against cooking with any wine one would find unacceptable to drink. Most professional chefs prefer to use inexpensive but drinkable wine for cooking, as they believe the added preservative significantly lowers the quality of the wine and subsequently the food made with that wine.

Desert wine : By definition, a dessert wine is a wine that has a higher sugar content (called residual sugar) than normal table wines.

Sparkling wine : is a wine with significant levels of carbon dioxide in it making it fizzy. The carbon dioxide may result from natural fermentation, (either in a bottle, as with the méthode champenoise, or in a large tank designed to withstand the pressures involved, as in the Charmat process) or as a result of carbon dioxide injection.

Ginger wine : is a fortified wine made from a fermented blend of ground ginger and raisins(can any1 say YUCK).

Fruit wine : are fermented alcoholic beverages made from a variety of ingredients (other than grapes) and having a variety of flavours. Fruit wines are usually referred to by their main ingredient fruit (e.g., plum wine), since the word wine alone is often legally defined as a beverage made only from grapes.

Champagne : is a sparkling wine produced by inducing the in-bottle secondary fermentation of wine to effect carbonation. It is produced exclusively within the Champagne region of France, from which it takes its name. While the term "champagne" is used by some makers of sparkling wine in other parts of the world, numerous countries limit the use of the term to only those wines that come from the Champagne appellation.

as u all know by now, i am all 4 and closely watching the fight against corruption in 9ja, and my dear friends, brothers and sisters it is a great, long and hard fight but ever the optimist i will say this much "at least we still have the fight in us".
i reported some weeks ago of my suspicions and rumours that the EFCC was deceiving us by keeping our attention on the little fish while the big fish made away, alas, was i wrong, they are further insulting us by rubbing it in our faces; files gone missing etc. God when will the battle end,(sighing deeply).

Human rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, says the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mrs. Farida Waziri, is not fit to head the commission following the disappearance of the case files of 31 suspected corrupt ex-governors.
The EFCC boss had announced that the case files of some ex-governors, charged with corrupt practices, had disappeared, an act that has cast doubts on the ability of the commission to win the war against corruption. Speaking with P.M.News on telephone, from London, yesterday, Fawehinmi asked, “how can the files be missing?” The human rights activist said the missing files showed that Waziri is not competent enough to head the EFCC, which buttresses his earlier assertion.“Waziri should let us know how the files went missing. She must tell us the names of the 31 ex-governors whose files are missing, where and when the files got lost and what effort had been made to retrieve them.“It is ironic to say the files are missing. Waziri has to show us that she was not careless. If the files got missing, it shows that she is careless,” he stated.

Fawehinmi added that Farida must explain to the whole world how such important files, meant for the prosecution of corrupt ex-governors, went missing, adding that he had never heard of this kind of situation in the history of EFCC. He stated that the current scenario showed the inability of Waziri to pilot the affairs of the commission, adding that “I have a court case against her”.“She has no legal competence to be the chairman of EFCC. She is not capable of doing the job. This has brought a serious dimension to the fight against corruption.“It shows that she is not capable of protecting the integrity of the commission. How can a whole EFCC chairman tell us that such files are missing? This lady must give us lots of explanation on this,” Gani fumed.
Also, the National President, Campaign for Democracy (CD), Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, has called on the Senate to probe EFCC’s missing files on the 31 ex-governors.“The controversy over the missing files of 31 ex-governors has raised fundamental questions about the suitability or otherwise of Mrs Farida Waziri to head the EFCC.
“Many Nigerians, including CD, called to question the integrity of Mrs. Waziri when she was nominated by president Yar’Adua to head the EFCC, five months ago,” she said.Okei-Odumakin said the Senate’s probe on the missing files should ascertain from Waziri’s predecessors, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu and Ibrahim Lamorde, what was handed over to her and for Waziri to produce the EFCC staff from whose custody the files disappeared.“The Senate in particular owes a duty in this regard because the cases against the ex-governors were presented before it.
“Corruption is killing our country by the day and all patriotic Nigerians should not allow corruption to kill the war against it through its agents and fronts.“In decent climes, it does not even take this kind of probe we are calling for before a Mrs. Waziri would know that her position is no longer tenable,” Okei-Odumakin added.

Algeria, Guinea, Mali, Morocco and Tunisia will be in pot two; Benin, Burkina Faso, Gabon, Kenya and Zambia in pot three; and Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Sudan and Togo in pot four.

The draw in Zurich on Oct. 20 will form five groups. The five group winners join host South Africa at the 2010 World Cup, and the top three teams in each group qualify for the 2010 African Cup of Nations in Angola.

i remember my prose in my secondary school days, all by 9ja authors b4 i let myself be caught with a mills&boon. the stores were entertaining and filled with knowledge, 9ja authors have been doing it and are still doing it. this is an exercpt by a 9ja author on the new and abounding future of 9ja and its writers.

It seems the gods of literature have officially tagged 2007 the year for the Nigerian writer. First Achebe won the Man Booker International Prize, then Adichie followed with the Orange Prize, and although none of them went on to win ultimately, three Nigerians were shortlisted for the Caine Prize. Also, in an interesting coincidence, 2007 saw the publication of Helen Oyeyemi’s The Opposite House, Biyi Bandele’s Burma Boy, my Measuring Time, Chris Abani’s The Virgin of Flames, and Ben Okri’s Starbook.
At a reading in London recently a woman asked, jokingly, the reason for this preponderance of Nigerian writers in the news. Is it because Nigeria is more populous than other African countries or are Nigerians more clever? Statisticians put it at one out of every six Africans being a Nigerian; so if all Africans were writers, one out of every six African writers would be a Nigerian. Interesting, but it doesn’t explain why the Nigerians are so successful, and not only in 2007 (1991: first black African Booker Prize winner, Okri, Nigerian; 1985: first African Nobel Prize for literature winner, Soyinka, Nigerian). Apart from being the most populous country, Nigeria is arguably Africa’s most complex country. What these writers are doing is explaining in intimate, human terms, this complexity — and luckily for them, they are doing it at the right time, the time of the IT revolution. This means access to a wider audience than the earlier generations who were published by Heinemann African Writers Series and confined to the Africa section in specialist bookstores.

Recently I got a mail from a woman in Yorkshire saying that my novel has helped her to understand Nigeria better. She said what she had before was an “aeroplane-view of Nigeria”, but my book has given her an “eye-level” understanding. To many outsiders Africa remains a complex conundrum, and most Africa-watchers agree that understanding Nigeria is perhaps the first step towards understanding Africa. Civil wars, dictatorships, poverty, and all the other favourite stereotypes of Africa in the press, Nigeria has them, but it also has what the press doesn’t report, most of which is positive.
But of course writers do not write because they want to interpret their countries or cultures to readers, they just write what they have to write.

But what defines these new writers (mostly seen to mean born after 1960), how do they differ from older writers such as Achebe, Soyinka, and even Ben Okri? Whereas it is possible to say that the earlier writers have their nationalist African politics in common, the younger writers seem to be less encumbered. This is not to say they are apolitical; they are very political — after all, the political could be said to be one of the defining traditions of African literature, but their politics are less unified, more individual, less predictable. This works in their favour because it frees them to explore more diverse themes. We see that diversity when we compare three Nigerian novels published between 2003-06: from Chris Abani’s Becoming Abigail (2006) about the exploitation of the main character, Abigail, by family members in Nigeria and London, to Adichie’s family tragedy in Purple Hibiscus (2003) set in Eastern Nigeria, to Oyeyemi’s fantastical The Icarus Girl (2005) set in Nigeria and the UK. Thematically the three books have nothing in common, the only thing they share is their authors’ Nigerian origin. These writers are streching the limits of their country’s borders, and questioning our stereotypic knowledge of that country.

For the sake of analysis I will divide the new Nigerian writers into two sub-categories; but I will first put them all into one broad category: they all live permanently or partially outside Nigeria. In the first category I will place those that were either born outside Nigeria, or left at a very early age. In this group are Diana Evans, Helen Oyeyemi, David Nwokedi, Segun Afolabi, Uzodinma Iweala, etc. Some of them, such as Evans and Nwokedi, are multiracial, and almost all of them will question the tag, “Nigerian writer”. To them Nigeria is merely a fictional country where they set their stories, an echo from their parents’ memories. Their characters often find themselves taking the plane to Nigeria to seek “identity”, such as the characters in Diana Evans’ 26A and in David Nwokedi’s Fitzgerald’s Wood. But this search for ancestral memories and family ties is mostly unsuccessful, they realise that home is where you live, where your happy memories were made.
The second category is of those who left Nigeria to pursue their writing career — most of them came as students or writing fellows and decided to stay on after the publication of their first books. These are people such as myself, Adichie, Biyi Bandele and Abani. These writers focus on Nigeria in theme and setting, and are very comfortable with the term “Nigerian writer”. And in their novels the very anger and frustration that drove them out of their country has now become their inspiration. It is in their books, more than in that of the first group, that we get closest to the smells and sights and pains and joys of Nigeria.
It is not hard to see that the themes of place and identity will grow in the new Nigerian writing, because as these authors are forced to make their homes in the West due to their continuing success, they seek to imaginatively reclaim their country, and to rationalise their anger at their country for being unable to keep them, to fructify their aspirations. We see hints of these themes in Abani’s The Virgin of Flames, set in Los Angeles, Afolabi’s Goodbye Lucille, set in Germany, and Oyeyemi’s The Opposite House, set in London. Oyeyemi’s book in particular has nothing to with Nigeria or Nigerians — it is about an immigrant Cuban family — but in their discussions of place and displacement you can hear the questions Oyeyemi is trying to answer for herself, about her own place.

The African has often been described as a natural story-teller. The Nigerian seems to possess that gene in abundance. Because most social infrastructures are stunted, and most dreams are never realised, the only way we can turn our defeats into victories, our fears into strengths, our shame into pride, is in our stories.
It is hard to say what the future holds for us. Already we are being described as the “next India”. In terms of stories and ability we could be. But a lot of us realise that the Indians have one thing we don’t have, a healthy publishing industry at home. After the withdrawal of most of the big publishers in the 1980s because of the failing local economy, a huge vacuum was created in publishing, and only recently has there begun to emerge an entrepreneurial class that sees the possibility of cashing in on the success of the new writers and using that to resuscitate our comatose publishing industry. Two publishers in particular — Cassava Republic and Kachifo — not only publish Nigerian editions of books such as Evan’s 26A, Adichie’s Half of a Yellow Sun, and my two novels, but they also fly in these writers on ambitious book tours. Gradually a local fan base is being established, a reading culture and hopefully a whole book industry is being revived

hello 1 'n' all,

yep m back again with a subject that is dear to my heart, not bcos m single( cough, cough, clearing my throat) but bcos of what is means for the society at large 'n' wat is says about where we r headed as a people.
so the million naira question, "does living together before marriage actually help anything or any1?"
my resounding answer is NO. i don't believe so and for all y'all who don't agree wa8 before u chew my head off ok? thank God that the various arguments against this phenomenon of co habiting or indirect marriage have gone beyond just religious sentiments, which is much more disheartening for me, and gotten into d realm of social science with surveys and studies to prove it.

now in the "modern" world e.g. America, Europe etc it is has become the norm but i know my 9ja is still majorly opposed to the idea, if for albeit stupid and retarded reasons like; if she lived with him all these years and he STILL didn't marry her there must be something horrible about her that we just can't see on the surface(stupid any1?) or i am not getting anything special from her as she has already done wifely things for this other guy and he STILL wouldn't marry her( yep u got it right, STUPID)

i will however commend 9ja for still trying to hold onto the core values of marriage in this fast pacing times of TV, porn and Internet which this cohabitation issue is trying to erode.
we hold onto the sacred institution of marriage because 1st of all we are basically a religious nation( a fact i am very proud of) and we believe God when he says it is better in the long run and secondly men tend to get lazy when they get things easy(primitive maybe, truth?, most certainly) and i personally think that any woman who agrees to live with the man before getting marriage is playing into the mans game of getting things easy with as little investment possible and is in the long run selling herself short. i personally think i am worth the whole ball and chain, and i can guarantee him he will enjoy every last second of it. LMAO.

now to be fair the folks who feel the other way about this SEEM to have a valid reason on the surface, reasons like; it gives you a better opportunity to get to know the person more intimately without the pain and heart ache of a divorce, and to this i say let the adventure of finding this out BE the journey that is your marriage and the ups and downs of trying to solve the issue will hopefully make your marriage stronger.
but by all means do not take my word for it, but do give these professionals a listen. now the link i have on here are not from Nigerian surveys but i think we can learn early what no to do to end up in this dire situation.

now it wouldn't be fair to leave u all with the dread of what to do to ensure a good, long lasting marriage now that i have convinced you, LOL, of the perils of cohabiting.
fear not, first of all we( as una know say i join d people wen dey find, lmao) need to how to increase our chances of getting and maintaining this happy union, and some of it is outlined here.
and most of all go into marriage with the right idea and temperament, debunking ourselves of these myths on marriage.

and before i leave i would like to commend people( men and women) who have long since decided that this was and is the right path to the hope of a more successful marriage, not only for our sake do we do this but also for our unborn children, it is quiet easy especially in these times to join what is fast being considered the norm and even COOL. no one sees the efforts we put into not having children out of wedlock etc, and YES it is a whole lot of effort. this is one of the reasons why i still love and respect tyra banks, no matter what people say about her, she is 35 and still keeping on with her values. keep strong, fight the good fight, lol.

The Rivers state Govt. scam continues

well even i didn't think things with the Rivers State Government would unravel this quick, just a couple of days ago the accountant general of the state refuted the claims of account freezes etc but as i said yesterday the truth will come to light, and it has. i cannot say anymore execpt pls read on

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday arrested and detained Nyeson Wike, Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Governor, and the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Magnus Abbe, over alleged loot of the state treasury running into over N300million.The EFCC said the state's accountant-general and the commissioner of finance in the state were said to have travelled to London yesterday in company of Governor Rotimi Amaechi, possibly to avoid arrest.

Spokesperson for the EFCC, Femi Babafemi, who confirmed the detention of Chief of Staff and the SSG to Daily Champion yesterday said they were already in the net while "the finance commissioner and accountant general escaped to London today with the Governor."It would be recalled that the detained Chief of Staff who had gone to the office of the EFCC to clear himself from the allegation of corruption was accompanied by the SSG since the state government was involved.

Also, EFCC had before now frozen two accounts belonging to the state government as well as an individual account said to belong to the Chief of Staff, Wike, as part of its efforts at fighting alleged massive corruption and treasury looting in the state.According to sources in the EFCC, the Chief of Staff, SSG are now in net because they felt that the alleged political solution sought for the case at was going to sail through but its failure landed them in the EFCC net yesterday evening.

Some of the allegations being investigated by the EFCC, include that the Chief of Staff, Mr. Wike is allegedly in control of a massive building in Port Harcourt worth about N150 million, which he reportedly told investigators that he was building on behalf of Governor Amaechi and that all the transactions was done using cash taken out of the state accounts with Zenith Bank of Nigeria in Port Harcourt."The Chief of Staff to the governor, Nyeson Wike, in connivance with Zenith Bank officials at the Azikiwe Road branch, opened one of the accounts (Number 601-091-6587) on March 27th 2008 with the fictitious name, "Harrison Ba Princewill." The fictitious account was being run by Wike on behalf of Governor Rotimi Amaechi."the account lacked such required information as passport photographs and information about the next of kin of "Harrison B. Princewill". However, the account was fully active and enjoying daily inflows of cash such that by April 26 2008, that is, within one month, it had already been credited with N3.6 billion ($30 million)."As the money swelled in Zenith bank, officials notified Wike that the account was being monitored for suspicious activities.

On June 5th 2008, Mr. Wike colluded with a Zenith bank staff named "Mohammed" to change the account details and convert it to a "Government House Account". "Harrison Ba Princewill" then became a depositor to the new "Government House Account".Just about the same time, another account directly controlled by Nyeson Wike (Number 602-500-4949) at the same branch of Zenith Bank in Port Harcourt began to witness a flurry of activities. Between June 5 and July 3rd 2008, the sum of N223 million passed into the account from the new "Government House Account" and several illegal transfers followed afterwards."And then, on September 5, 2008 at exactly 3:30p.m., Mr. Wike withdrew the sum of N300 million from his account at Zenith Bank, and promptly disappeared into thin air.

"Of the two Rivers state government accounts frozen last Wednesday by the EFCC, Wike had allegedly withdrawn about N400 million from the converted "Government House Account." The remainder of N3 billion remains frozen. The other account had N27 billion left in it.

well people what can i say its all there in black and white, the evidence i must say looks strong, although i have some questions why did Mr Wike Nyeson go to the EFCC to explain things, was it becos he was actually innocent or was he planning for a misdirection? n i might have been away from 9ja 4 a while but there is no way some1 can just transfere money 4rm ur account without u knowing( 9ja crimes neva deverope reach there), i wonder when d governor 'n' his accountant will come back and what excuse they will give for their absence, ehhh, hello, there's a whole state 2 run. plus how in d hell did they escape, why weren't their accounts frozen?, if it was how did they get money to travel? do they hv inside help?

nice work there by the EFCC at this time m not gonna rush to condemn the Rivers people until i hear their side of the story, they should come back 'n' explain to their state n Nigerians as a whole, our ears r open(syke, lol).

Good news from the entertainment industry, i am pleased to announce that the wife( Lola Omotayo) of Peter Okoye of P-Square has given birth to a baby boy sometime last week, on the 2nd of October, but don't quote me on that.

the baby was born in London and both mother 'n' child have not arrived back to the country yet.

The christening, according to Peter, is expected to hold as soon as Lola and the baby return next month.“I can’t disclose the exact time of their arrival at the moment, but if not next month, it will be December. I’m also keeping the name of the child close to my heart for now. I will unveil it when the time comes.“Although people have been suggesting names for me, even my twin brother, Paul, is yet to know the name I have settled for,” he also added, “it’s a thing of joy and I’m happy about it.”

River's state government account on freeze!!

hello people,

some bad or should i say good news 4rm the home front, i would like to call it good 4 now cos something positive is being done for now, only God knows for how long though.
as it turns out the E.F.C.C.[Economic and Financial Crimes Commission] Nigeria on the 2nd of October allegedly frozen one of the bank account of the River's state government(not governor) amidst rumors and petitions from concerned individuals of the state.

the state which was created by military decree on the 27th May 1967, is at present being governed by Gov. Rotimi Amaechi who came into power on the 26th of 0October 2007. it just casts bad light on his governance and the state which has and is still severely unstable.
it's all still hushed up but the EFCC have certain person's of interest that they want to talk to. here is the full gist out for now, be sure that i will keep u posted.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has frozen one of the accounts of the Rivers State government in a high profile bank over alleged money laundering.Very reliable sources told Vanguard that a top official of the state government (name withheld) whose account was allegedly used for illegal transfers and payments running to several hundreds of millions of naira, is also wanted by the EFCC to come and explain how he came about the huge amounts in his accounts.
According to EFCC sources the officials account which was opened in his name, was later converted into an account of the state government against public fiscal regulations and EFCC found out that huge sums like N50million, N100million, N200million and N300million, were at several times lodged into the account and that these monies disappeared at some point without records of what they were used for.
Asked how the EFCC came to know about the developments, sources said some concerned indigenes of Rivers State petitioned EFCC about huge transfers of money for fraudulent purposes and that the monies were being moved by the official.

but in other news(vanguard online) on the 3rd of October the rivers state government denied that any of its accounts have been frozen by the E.F.C.C.. the states financial commissioner Mr osinachukwu Ideozu released a statement to that effect asking people to disregard the vicious rumors and further assured the people that the amaechi led administration was one with government transparency and commitment to the people, as such the has signed the due process bill into law.

For those of you wondering what the "due process" or "due process of law" means,it's the principle that a person has a right to receive notice, and be heard in an orderly proceeding in order to protect his or her rights.

i know its scary to think that they r only just signing off on this now. with all these denials flying around only time will tell. but ur ever faithful here will keep u posted.

sorry for my absence i iv been buzy to say d least.

the face of africa competition is here 1nce again, although it was last seen in 2005, the competition is back with full force and they hope to be better than ever.

although still in the casting phase organiser r hopeful that the winner this year will still embody all of the attributes that the show stands for.

Now if u kw anything about the show, u should know the show's inugural winner turned super model and business woman oluchi onweagba ( a nigerian i might add, hala), who won at the tender age of 17yrs. she has teamed up with mnet face of africa to give this years winner not only their $50,000 cash prize but also a 3yr contract with her O Model Africa agency. she also has a website, here. we nigerian r extremely proud of her.

hopefuls should be aware that eligibility for the competition requires being of ages 17 to 24, documentation showing proof of identify and citizenship of any sub-Saharan African country. Further, entrants should note that the minimum height requirement is 1.72m/ 5ft 7.5in, the maximum hip measurement is 96cm and entrants should not have an existing modeling contract.

The Finale will be screened to DStv audiences in over 40 countries across the continent. These audiences will also be able to watch the Face of Africa process from start to finish, with M-Net screening three preliminary episodes in the run-up to the Finale, with each episode detailing the search.

White privilege

this is gonna be one of those serious topics, get ready folks.
i came across this term on the Internet, don't even remember how. and it struck me how true it was, of course we hv always know this( we = black and white and yellow and brown people) but it has only just in my opinion been given a befitting name.

going thru the video that i have downloaded for u guys, what strikes me most is his call for people( white) to become accountable for their actions, but i would go further to say that they be not AFRAID to hold other white people accountable for their actions as well. the points that he outlines as side effects of white privilege r so true. i think it is mostly fear that stops even the most good hearted people cold in their tracks from doing the right thing. fear of being segregated from their class, friends and family, fear of the prophecy of if u make friends with black people you become just like them further propagating the racist reasoning that black people behave "differently" and God help u d white person hanging out with blacks that you finally get attacked by a black person, please we blacks have been and r being attacked by white people everyday.

another point is this passive attitude or reluctance by some white to do something, anything when they witness a racist act. this oh it doesn't concern me attitude, just becos u do not c it affecting you directly doesn't mean it isn't. and doesn't that even make u more guilty of racism when u kw what is wrong n u do nothing about it.

i think the worst case of racism comes 4rm d police, the very people who r charged to serve n protect us. how r u protecting me when i am the 1st person who gets nabbed at d scene of a crime just bcos of my skin colour. yes this is what is hard-wired into our would be protectors right 4rm day 1 of the police academy. simply put the police r not to serve n protect black people.

on a final note i wld like to say pls people treat others exactly as u wld want to be treated, and God help us all.

White privilege is when you can get pregnant at seventeen like Bristol Palin and everyone is quick to insist that your life and that of your family is a personal matter, and that no one has a right to judge you or your parents, because “every family has challenges,” even as black and Latino families with similar “challenges” are regularly typified as irresponsible, pathological and arbiters of social decay.
White privilege is when you can call yourself a “fuckin’ redneck,” like Bristol Palin’s boyfriend does, and talk about how if anyone messes with you, you'll “kick their fuckin' ass,” and talk about how you like to “shoot shit” for fun, and still be viewed as a responsible, all-American boy (and a great son-in-law to be) rather than a thug.
White privilege is when you can attend four different colleges in six years like Sarah Palin did (one of which you basically failed out of, then returned to after making up some coursework at a community college), and no one questions your intelligence or commitment to achievement, whereas a person of color who did this would be viewed as unfit for college, and probably someone who only got in in the first place because of affirmative action.
White privilege is when you can claim that being mayor of a town smaller than most medium-sized colleges, and then Governor of a state with about the same number of people as the lower fifth of the island of Manhattan, makes you ready to potentially be president, and people don’t all piss on themselves with laughter, while being a black U.S. Senator, two-term state Senator, and constitutional law scholar, means you’re “untested.” 
White privilege is being able to say that you support the words “under God” in the pledge of allegiance because “if it was good enough for the founding fathers, it’s good enough for me,” and not be immediately disqualified from holding office--since, after all, the pledge was written in the late 1800s and the “under God” part wasn’t added until the 1950s--while if you're black and believe in reading accused criminals and terrorists their rights (because the Constitution, which you used to teach at a prestigious law school requires it), you're a dangerous and mushy liberal who isn't fit to safeguard American institutions. 
White privilege is being able to be a gun enthusiast and not make people immediately scared of you. 
White privilege is being able to have a husband who was a member of an extremist political party that wants your state to secede from the Union, and whose motto is “Alaska first,” and no one questions your patriotism or that of your family, while if you're black and your spouse merely fails to come to a 9/11 memorial so she can be home with her kids on the first day of school, people immediately think she’s being disrespectful. 
White privilege is being able to make fun of community organizers and the work they do--like, among other things, fight for the right of women to vote, or for civil rights, or the 8-hour workday, or an end to child labor--and people think you’re being pithy and tough, but if you merely question the experience of a small town mayor and 18-month governor with no foreign policy expertise beyond a class she took in college and the fact that she lives near Russia, you’re somehow being mean, or even sexist. 
White privilege is being able to convince white women who don’t even agree with you on any substantive issue to vote for you and your running mate anyway, because all of a sudden your presence on the ticket has inspired confidence in these same white women, and made them give your party a “second look.” 
White privilege is being able to fire people who didn’t support your political campaigns and not be accused of abusing your power or being a typical politician who engages in favoritism, while being black and merely knowing some folks from the old-line political machines in Chicago means you must be corrupt. 
White privilege is when you can take nearly twenty-four hours to get to a hospital after beginning to leak amniotic fluid, and still be viewed as a great mom whose commitment to her children is unquestionable, and whose "next door neighbor" qualities make her ready to be VP, while if you're a black candidate for president and you let your children be interviewed for a few seconds on TV, you're irresponsibly exploiting them.
White privilege is being able to give a 36-minute speech in which you talk about lipstick and make fun of your opponent, while laying out no substantive policy positions on any issue at all, and still manage to be considered a legitimate candidate, while a black person who gives an hour speech the week before, in which he lays out specific policy proposals on several issues, is still criticized for being too vague about what he would do if elected.
White privilege is being able to attend churches over the years whose pastors say that people who voted for John Kerry or merely criticize George W. Bush are going to hell, and that the U.S. is an explicitly Christian nation and the job of Christians is to bring Christian theological principles into government, and who bring in speakers who say the conflict in the Middle East is God’s punishment on Jews for rejecting Jesus, and everyone can still think you’re just a good church-going Christian, but if you’re black and friends with a black pastor who has noted (as have Colin Powell and the U.S. Department of Defense) that terrorist attacks are often the result of U.S. foreign policy and who talks about the history of racism and its effect on black people, you’re an extremist who probably hates America. 
White privilege is not knowing what the Bush Doctrine is when asked by a reporter, and then people get angry at the reporter for asking you such a “trick question,” while being black and merely refusing to give one-word answers to the queries of Bill O’Reilly means you’re dodging the question, or trying to seem overly intellectual and nuanced. 
White privilege is being able to go to a prestigious prep school, then to Yale and Harvard Business School (George W. Bush), and still be seen as an "average guy," while being black, going to a prestigious prep school, then Occidental College, then Columbia, and then Harvard Law, makes you "uppity" and a snob who probably looks down on regular folks.
White privilege is being able to graduate near the bottom of your college class (McCain), or graduate with a C average from Yale (W.), and that's OK, and you're still cut out to be president, but if you're black and you graduate near the top of your class from Harvard Law, you can't be trusted to make good decisions in office.
White privilege is being able to dump your first wife after she's disfigured in a car crash so you can take up with a multi-millionaire beauty queen (who you then go on to call the c-word in public) and still be thought of as a man of strong family values, while if you're black and married for nearly 20 years to the same woman, your family is viewed as un-American and your gestures of affection for each other are called "terrorist fist bumps."
White privilege is when you can develop a pain-killer addiction, having obtained your drug of choice illegally like Cindy McCain, go on to beat that addiction, and everyone praises you for being so strong, while being a black guy who smoked pot a few times in college and never became an addict means people will wonder if perhaps you still get high, and even ask whether or not you may have sold drugs at some point.
White privilege is being able to sing a song about bombing Iran and still be viewed as a sober and rational statesman, with the maturity to be president, while being black and suggesting that the U.S. should speak with other nations, even when we have disagreements with them, makes you dangerously naive and immature.

hello every1,

so i got up some mornings ago n realized that i was freezing, no problem there nothing a nice lonnnggg boiling hot shower wont solve, after my nice shower, i put on some lotion n proceeded to get ready for work.
as soon as i stepped outside d cold hit me like a ton of lead n i kept wondering y oh y till it occurred to me, duhhhhhhhh, its almost d end of September n d winter months r rolling in whether i like it or not, so quickly a little reminder to my self, stock up on d grease( only d best by d way, Palmer's hard formula Shea butter) n remember to get some 4 ur bro's as well( big sis, wat can i say).
anyway as i get 2 work i whine n complain about d cold n my friends at work look at me like m going crazy, no....... the weather is quiet nice(at this point i shld mention that they r all white lol), the only people who seem 2 concur wit my predicament r my black friends n we all come to d same conclusion we come 2 at this time of the yr. "black people don't do cold" hahahahahaha.

i 4 one would not let the matter b, surely m not over exaggerating d shiver that is running thru my bones, n all my friends n that many black people in d world cannot just b making all this up, y wld we? 4 d attention factor? wat attention? people think we r saying rubbish when we complain of the cold.
there is only 1 thing left 4 it, research the world wide web, there must be some scientific proof to attest to this phenomenon(yeah u heard me right lol lol lol), people just hvn't heard of it n some1 in d PR department is not doing anything about spreading d word, so other folks including us d black folks..... okkkkkk i admit it, me don't feel like we r losing our minds.

after dayz of digging n prodding all i cld come up wit were physiological reasons, no hard evidence of say genes or blood group. we r supposed to make do with the explanation that we feel more cold bcos we hv longer limbs n fuller lips, that gives more surface area for the cold to catch us wit em hand, abi?( pleaseeeeeeeeee i am about to burst a vein) i kw some real tall white folks n they dont feel d cold d way i do. they hv howeva made breakthru or discoveries in d agriculture field as cold temperatures affects d crops especially corn.

it seems to me that not enuff research has been done on the subject matter and or nobody is taking it serious enuff. i kw nobody thinks its a matter of life n death but wldn't it go a long way to a better understanding of ourselves if it was something that cld b rectified? or maybe in d process of looking for answers on d topic we stumble upon something else, that is science after all.

so m afraid people until some1 does more research or finds something concrete we r just gonna hv to keep stocking up on d grease this time of d yr, every yr, as per usual.

i am a real optimist when it comes to 9ja altho i also think every society needs d pessimists 2 always keep them on their tippy toes, lol.
the Nigerian tourism has taken a huge bust with in inception of the sat nav for vehicles as well as mobile phones.
the director-general for the Nigerian tourism development cooperation (NTDC) Mr Otunba Runsewe launched the initiative on the 8th of Sept with the Nigerian press in attendance. this is a view of wat went on. i need 2 give Ekaette a smack, doesn't she c those who r at least trying to do bera things for 9ja.
that aside i have visited the Nigerian tourism site, pretty good considering wat i expected, check it out yourself here. read up on the sat nav thang 'n' more its got hostels, hotels, guest house, maps beaches etc, imagine if all these places are actually accessible via d sat nav thing. yeppy.

the company(Nigerian i might add) that is making this a reality is 3dtechnologies(3dt). 4rm the website it all looks legit but i need 2 call my peeps in 9ja to find out how far, how much it cost n if i can be used on any ol' phone. it might b there but no 1 is gonna use it if it cost ridiculous amounts of money. get me?

Paralympic gold 2008

HIP HIP HIP HOORAY,

so with the paralympic games finished on the 17th of September in Beijing, china, u can barely turn a corner in England or flip on d tv witout so much of ohhh how gr8 England did n so forth n so on. i felt so sad cos i thot men when 9ja won change n start 2 dey give physical challenged people their due respect n not pity.

filled wit righteous indignation, i set forth wit trustee Google by my side to get unbiased news on the games, i went high n low 4 something, anything dat didn't hv 2 do with Britain n d games, and wat do u kw, other countries even 9ja took part and won medals, gold medals in this games. no be God.

now about that thing of not knowing where u r going until u kw where u hv been? lol. here's how the games began.

from the final tally of countries and their medals, Nigerian at made it half way thru d list of countries to take 30th position with 4 gold and silver medals and 1 bronze medal totaling 9 medals all 2gether.

GOLD

Ishaku Ruel won the 1st gold medal for Nigeria in the power lifting discipline set a new world record in the men's -48kg category by lifting a stunning 169.0kg.

the 40yrs old father who lost his limbs to polio says he had been training for this event for 8yrs and his wife and kids are quite proud of his accomplishments.

so r we brother, so are we. congratulations

Ejike Lucy Ogechukwu also won a gold medal for us, setting another world record on Sept 10th also for power lifting in the women's -48kg category lifting a stunning 130.0kg.

she also hols the world record of 127.5kg in the women's 44kg category which she set in Athens paralympics.

many congrats madame.

Iyazi Eucharia Njideka also won another 2 gold medals in the discus and shot put events(can any1 say super woman?)

she set a paralympic record of 35.21m in the discus throwing event on the 16th.

the enugu resident(everybody give it up 4 d east side, coal city crew,lol) said she was surprised by her win at the discus because all her training and hopes were set fully on the shot put.

a total of two gold medals undoubtedly makes here the best Nigerian athlete at the games.

CONGRATULATIONS.

SILVER

Nneji Amoge Victoria won the silver medal on the 14th in womens -67.50kg powerlifting category. she said due to her injuries sustained during training she never thot she would go this far and thus her silver medal is golden to her and she will for ever remember the joys of Beijing 2008.

many congratulations madame.

Anozie Grace Ebere who set the paralympic title for women's +82.50kg powerlifting at 165.00kg ended up with a silver medal . she argued and cried that she deserved the gold as she and the chinese lady who held the former world record of 160kg both lifted the same weight of 165.00kg but faltered in their third attempt of 167.50kg.
the gold medal was finally awarded the Chinese lady although Grace was upset she refused to carry the case further as she claimed no Nigeria's were officials and there was no 1 2 press her case. she is however elated that her record wasn't broken.

congrats.

Adesoji Adekunle who is at least partially blind brought home another silver medal for Nigeria. he holds the world record of 10.75sec in the men's 100m race which he set in Athens 2004, but alas this time he came second with 10.95sec.

the athlete blamed his loss of the gold to a hamstring injury he sustained 20mins b4 the game. imagine that operating on half tank 'n' still kicking ass. big congrats.

another Nigerian powerlifter Aligekwe Obioma Daleth competed in the men's 100kg and placed 2nd with a lift of 235kg (omo all those poundy plus santana plus eba no waste at all at all for all these powerlifters them body). congrats sir.

and last but by no means least

BRONZE

Igiti Patience Aghimile claimed her bronze medal in the -60kg women's powerlifting with a lift of110.0kg.thank u and congrats.

now while i am ecstatic at Nigeria's performance in the games i must complain of the lack of press, video's and pics especially on the Internet. these people r hero's, and these events r to b kept alive to further inspire people. anyway i believe we r getting there.

anyhoo to cheer myself up i started browsing thru my fav 9ja website and i came across this heading and thot, more stuff i dont kw about 9ja, even wit all d legal ties i hv via my family.

its all here, pls feel free not 2 read it all at 1ce( lol rolling on d floor), u will understand when u get there. its just nice 2 kw there is a place i can go when i want a quick check up on something. i dont need 2 go all d way to the library to hunt down some book m not even sure exsists in d library.

The end of the dawn

Hi,

i just found out 2day that funmi iyanda, the hostest for the the topmost Nigerian talk show and winner of so many awards will be saying her final goodbyes to the show by the end of this year ( sob, sob). the show will definitely air on NTA till the end of September and more online, there are even talks of re-runs.
she has been doing the show for 10 long years now and as she wrote in her blog she has been and conquered this medium and wants to brave a fresh new frontier which i am sure is what got her into new dawn in the 1st place.
although we r going to miss her on the show we do wish her all the best in her new endeavour, whatever it might be and eagerly await her new and improved self.
i did ask her if the show was going to be taken over by some1 else and given a new name, i will inform u guys as soon as she gets back to me. but she did hint about coming out wit a book, will also keep u posted.

after the previous topic which was soooo serious i decided to lighten things up wit( an it should have been done much earlier, trust me) a sequel to my lets talk fashion topic.
now the site is dedicated to 9ja related topics, so most people might ask why was i rambling on about fashion in other parts of the world.

well i strongly believe in knowing where u come from to know where u are going to, any clearer now? lol. this is not to say in any way mind u that 9ja people where not gasp..... wearing clothes by then, its just that there is no proper documentation, we 4give the outside world for only just realizing and relating to our numerous talents.

the 9ja fashion industry has recently been re branded and repacked especially for the western persuasion. i think we have realized that these people need it in small doses n they will finally get there, lol.
i say rebranding bcos Nigeria and Nigerians in my humble opinion (cough, cough) are some of the most fashion conscious people in Africa n dare i say it even the world.
how do i kw this?, under what authority do i make these statements.
well i dont kw? maybe its the way 9ja people dig incessantly for the next new fabric to sew clothe when them go use go traditional wedding o, or the way them dey baff up to go church, even to go pick pickin from school turn baffing competition.
i have so much memories from back in the day, and i wld put up some pics of my mum if i wasn't sure she'd rip me a new 1, thanks but I'd like to still be her child after this here blogging session.

in my search to dig up on the history on the Nigerian fashion industry, i was often quiet frustrated as it is an almost impossible endeavor, is it that people dont yet realize the power of the Internet and pictures? note 2 self keep on trying
i mean its a shame really for a country that is doing so much in the fashion world not only in the African fashion scene, that there isn't like a website that lists or even has links to these websites, i mean it comes down to good business scene, South Africa has 1. oh and don't even get me started on tryna find a website for interior decorators, mega nightmares.

note 2 people, if for whatever reason or excuse u do not have a website pls try creating a page on facebook or myspace, preferably facebook,(groups are free to start up on facebook) its got more people i think and its all the rage now, how do u think these 9ja artist are getting such widespread notoriety.

the Nigerian fashion week 2008 just concluded in Lagos, here is the official website, on it you can find out how to register etc.
well according to the website the event ended 3 days ago on the 17th of September it was a spring summer collection i can't be too sure anymore, all m seeing is circles now.
note 2 self, do we have an autumn/winter collection?, we could infuse African designs into winter clothing.must check further.
at press time i still could not find any videos or pics of the even, not even 4rm pure foto's, but will keep u guys updated asap.

so its not totally bad news. i have some good news. since i couldn't find any website that listed the designers or their websites, i took it upon myself to give a hand in this direction. i by no means have all the designers listed just the ones making all the noise now, putting your country on the map, and, looky here, some even have pages and groups on facebook. more good news(i told ya), Nigerian has been chosen as the 41st country to take part in the world fashion week,organized by the world fashion association based in Hollywood which is also the regulatory body for the world fashion industry, the opening event is taking place in Hollywood in November 2008 while the main event in Feb 2009 in New York city. the event was made possible by the legendary gold which host the Nigerian fashion week.
any lucky designer to represent our country must 1st present their collection in the Nigerian fashion week 2008( c y m so upset there's no pics, videos or news yet) which the president of the world fashion association Mr Paco De James is rumored to be expected to attend.
also 9ja is expected to launch the world fashion week-Nigeria, later on in the year, dunno when tho seeing as we are already in September gerrit. lol.

and i would like to add that at press time all the info supplied was correct and up to date, with regards to the designers websites, i cannot however say that they will be up for ever, some might be undergoing construction or for whatever reason close all together.

hey peeps,

i was browsing the web 2day trying to get the latest on this ridiculous "indecent dressing" bill. when i stumbled upon this few minutes video on youtube by new dawn(everybody hala) and thot it was nice to see women of the same age group( seriously guessing here lol, okkkkk but u catch my drift) as the senator condemning the bill.
some people have argued that the issues and reasons raised by the senator are mainly due to the fact that in her time a lot of these type of dressing were not in and as such she isn't keeping in wit the modern generation. and seeking to punish us for being born in this era, like any1 asked us when we wanted to be born.
as i said these women were vehemently against the bill. it confirms that there are women out there who have moved along with the tide of the times and have not let themselves be overwhelmed of engulfed by it.
the senator i believe has been overwhelmed and decided that she would treat a nation of people like her kids or grand kids, where she would tell them don't wear this and wear this and everything will go smoothly.
we all kw this cannot be the case as a country is made up of different kinds of people with there own interpretation of what is right and wrong, and the free will to do as they please.

my 2nd point i want to put thru is that the senator has stated that the bill is to "SAVE" us women from the growing number of rape cases. which if any1 agrees with her bill, is our fault becos of the provocative way we dress.
if these people who put themselves in power, cos certainly we didn't, would bother to do a little bit of reading to further educate themselves,as we all know, u can never be too educated.
they would understand that rape was, is and will never be a physical thing.

although the word rape comes from the Latin verb rapere: to seize or take by force. it does not in anyway do justice to the physiological state of the rapist and his/her victim.
all rapist are the same physiologically, they just cover their agenda under different guises: we wanted it by our form of dressing, they are under stress n trying to let of steam, they were drunk and it was a mistake(well if u were so drunk and didn't kw what u were doing y didn't u rape another man or 1 of those goat by the way side????????)

there are different types of rape, as recognized by the Nigerian government: statutory rape, marital rape etc.

there are also different type of rapist, there is the
mental rapist and after u read this and watch the 3rd video you will be plunged into more fear as it seams that the very people we are charging to save us might as well be RAPIST.

ok people,

m back again with another gist for u guys on watz taking 9ja out there, 'n' making these catz realize that we r here 2 stay n not thinking of going anywhere. yeah u heard me right.

N the word is fashion, a brief history of fashion shows us just how long people have always had a deep desire to stand out 4rm d crowd and look good.

Now all this talent had to be show cased and for people to see, know wat was in vogue for the season and in the long run, buy, as the fashion industry is also a business that generates millions of dollars a year. so much so that now even celebrities are now having brands of their own, indeed these days its almost a given example Nelly~ applebottoms, eminem~shadyltd, some of the more famous ones are p diddy~seanjohn, j.lo~sweetfaceand justsweet, beyonce~house of dereon and dereon, victoria beckham~dvbstyle. So came about the birth of fashion week which was intented to be a meduim for established and upcoming designers to show case their work.

in this elite world of fashion as with all other industries comes their own terms which i guess is to secretly show us the line that separates us outsiders. Alas, fear not for i hv come to debunk the mystery, to make clear and give full and in depth meaning to the 1nce unclear, with a lot of pictures, lol.

first terminology is
ready-to-wear or pret-a-porter(french of course)

simply means ready made clothing, which are made or sewn in standard sizes and available from merchandises in stock and mostly sold in bulk. mostly in expensive clothes although some can be expensive but never as much haute couture. these clothes are mostly sold on the high street, so your high street labels like h&m, topshop.etc. although there are also some high end designers who also make ready to wear lines.

like elie saab, valentino, dior, miu miu, alexander mc queen, micheal kors etc. which definitely feature on d pricey end of the ready to wear spectrum.

Next we have the term

haute couture(more french)

haute means high or elegant, couture means sewing or dressmaking. so put together it refers to designing, creating and selling high fashion custom made womens wear to a select clientele.

the rights to this name are protected by the syndical chamber for haute couture located only in paris. members are required to present runway shows twice a yr, each collection consisting of upto 35 separate outfits for evening and daywear.

haute couture clothing costs from as little(yeah right) as $26,000 to over $100,000. taking about 100 to 400 hrs to make 1 dress. today only about 2,000 women in the world buy couture; 60% of those are american with only 200 as regular customers. what inevitably happens is that these talented designers loans their clothese to celebrities for publicity.

Next term is

avant garde(french, surprise any1?)

this is a term that is oh so confusing because it lends its meaning to other fields such as politics, music, arts(photography), design(jewellery, architecture, furniture), culture etc. It means advanced gaurd or vanguard. But with regards to fashion it refers to works that

are innovative and experimental.

i mostly like to call it anything that starts a new trend. by its very nature nothing stays vanguard for very long because once it becomes a norm it is no longer experimental or new and exciting. getting the picture yet?

another thing about avant garde is that it does defy a confined meaning as wat might seem new or innovative to 1 might not seem so to another.

huge note to people, this does not in anyway include celebrities who wear bizzare outfits to award nights okay? lol
some popular avant garde fashion designers include ann-sophie, miguel adrover, eddie baddeo etc.

don't kw about u but the more i learn about nigeria, the more i love it, we hv had this relationship going now for more than 20yrs n our love is still waxing stronger. lol

hello 1nce again,

its me back with more good stuff for y'all.
so i don't kw about u guyz out there but m soooooooo proud of being Nigerian i wear it with a badge of honor. that being said it doesn't stop the confusion or sheer panic when people ask me "what language do u speak in nigeria?", "how many languages do u speak", "watz d population of nigeria?" d list of questions just go on 'n' on. it's not that i don't think its important 2 kw but 9ja is mine, get me?........ whether i kw all this info or not, lol.
so i took it upon myself to educate( fear not its not a history class) people on my gr8 country, via the famous wikipedia........ of course.
ehhhhhhhhhh i found most of their info correct execpt for a few which i will address now:
official languages: igbo, youruba and hausa. dont kw where they got the rest 4rm.
and they said something about lack of medical care due to brain drain of doctors, lol lol lol. m just thinking of all d medical students that we turn out of universities every year, that hv no place to go cos of no jobs.
other than that most of it i was even surprised to hear. Una believe say 9ja get (gasp) 521 languages.
hmmmmmm note 2 self check which countries hv more, m sure china is right up there lol. i hv some chinese friends n bless i love them.

i hv been to the "official" nigerian website. quite low standard, appauling to say the least considering that it will almost cetainingly and SHOULD be the 1st impression people should have of nigeria. i tried to leave feed back for them to express my disgust n distress but it didn't go thru, even the content left so much to be desired. some1 needs to get off their fat ass n fix that site pronto. the only plus i saw was maybe this site is where to go to download official forms 'n' all IF u can download them, and they also confirmed the main indeginous languages spoken in nigeria(see previous post).

hello 1 'n' all,
M quiet new at this, so pls jeje.............
the idea of blogging came to me when i saw all these other people doing it 'n' i thot, u kw wat????, i should give this darn thing a try as i seem to be on the Internet all day.
now this is not gonna be anything about my life lol, cos as i said earlier i veg out in front of my lappy, i do want 2 keep my peeps informed of things happening in 9ja along wit my own( cough, cough) lol ideas and reviews. I will b commenting on a range of subjects 4rm sports 2 music, fashion, politics, religion etc, etc.
the blog is gonna take a positive and gentle note on the good, the bad and the ugly of 9ja, as so many of the world press seem to concentrate and magnify on only the bad and not enuff on d good, i think.
Chi9ja chooses to be a part of the solution.
